If you haven't seen the 2008 Salon Market Trends Report its worth reading.

http://salonlife.blogs.ncacares.org/2009/02/24/2008-salon-market-trends-report/

It really puts into perspective what is happening on an industry level. Overall salon industry growth is at a historically low 2.8% and haircare product growth is even lower at 2.1 %. I thought it was interesting to note that direct sales to salons accounts for 12% of the industry and includes Bumble & Bumble, Aveda, Kerastase, etc. Also reported that new genres of “Naturals” products, like “Brazilian Keratin” and “Moroccan Oil,” are showing pockets of vitality. From where I sit that is definitely happening and emerging brands have a real opportunity to position themselves as the genuine "Natural" product instead of the older brands with new packaging.

We have NO CONTROL over what happens to us on a daily basis.

The ONLY CONTROL WE HAVE IS HOW WE DEAL WITH IT.
We have a choice. We can be at either cause or effect of our life.

THIS MAKES US VERY POWERFUL!

The beauty industry as we know it is changing but the manufacturers and distributors don't get it. They continue to do promotions like Buy 5, Get 1 Free. That would be a great promotion if salons or hairdressers could afford it but the reality is that they are struggling to pay the rent. When the salons stop ordering that causes the distributors to become overstocked. Next thing you know its on eBay or they are sending the whole product line back to the manufacturer.

The salons and the hairdressers don't know how to advertise effectively using the Internet. Most small businesses across America don't. I think we can agree that any business that does not market themselves will shrink. The only salons that are aggressively marketing themselves right now are the chains because they have professionals managing the marketing at corporate. I'm predicting that we are going to see a lot of salons and hairdressers out-of-business in 2009. Distributors will be next with many of them barely holding on as it stands right now.

The manufacturers have had it too good for too long. They have used "education" to train hairdressers that their brand is the best and then relied on distributors to send a sales person to the salon to keep them using their brand. To use an analogy, it would be like Amazon.com using door-to-door salesmen to sell books. The world as we know it has changed and manufacturers still don't get it.

The manufacturers need to market their professional brands online to consumers and drive consumer demand into the salons. Let the salons do what they do best and that is service their customers. If manufacturers were smart they would operate like a Best Buy and do mult-channel marketing. Pick it up at a salon near you or just buy it online. Its not that hard! But when you talk to beauty manufacturers they bring up every conceivable reason why they can't do this.

All it takes is one beauty brand of any size to put their resources behind a serious effort to market themselves online and they could drive massive demand for their products.

I appreciate the passion Joseph and Amy. I have many years on you and have seen a lot in our industry as well as many other industry categories. What you are experiencing is not new or unique to the beauty industry. It is true it is worse now in a much more permissive country that is far less boundaried than it used to be. However, what hasn't changed is that there are still many like yourselves who are the cream that rises to the top and becomes successful in whatever their career choice.

Sharon, my wife and partner, and I have always had a helping hand available for anyone who was willing to put in the legwork and do what they say they are going to do. If you are not one of those people, it is not my job to coax you or support you. You can always recognize the qualities of those that really 'want it'. Conversely, you can never help those (as you tried to do) that don't. Frustrating isn't it.

If someone does want to move ahead. we will go out of our way to assist. Industry, passion and hard work should be rewarded with support and guidance, In almost all cases, success is the result of that effort and investment. It's pretty hard to fail when you are the cream. It happens, but infrequently.

You cannot change the world. Just those around you that seek out your aid. Avoid complainers. Find those of like mind and gather around together. We are many in number and you can usually find us all in places like this seeking each other out.

You're a good man Joseph for trying to help.

We have started some conversations in the BeautyPRpro group and we also have our own PR self-help blog at http://www.beautyprpro.com. I think you will enjoy and appreciate the topics and we would certainly welcome your experience and thoughtful comments as would our members or blog subscrbers. Please feel free to visit.
